In 2020 the infectious disease landscape for the human population changed dramatically. Emerging viral threats can no longer be ignored the way they have in years past…

Sometimes we need to be reminded of truths so fundamental we are inclined to overlook their importance.

Rude reminders tend to be the way we get back on track. Like the blood test that comes back at the doctor’s office. The one that lets us know our fasting blood sugar is far too high, and the result of “topping up” with sugary treats is that we now risk losing our ability to properly regulate the amount of life-sustaining insulin coursing throughout our body.

Or the MRI scan which reveals as a consequence of settling in front of the television 5 hours a night year after year, a worrisome “Swiss cheese” pattern in the structure of our aging brain.

But waking up one morning with type 1 diabetes, or progressive dementia, when the day before you were perfectly healthly is no more likely than the sudden emergence of an exotic and potentially deadly virus from a far-off place. The kind of malevolent microscopic foe that, if it doesn’t end up killing you, or putting you into the hospital for weeks on end, or even bankrupting you with outrageous medical bills, might put you firmly out of work for the forseeable future.

These outcomes are never simple accidents of the natural world.

They are not spontaneous events. They arise as a logical outcome of the laws of cause and effect. And that’s actually good news. Because it means we have much more control over them than many of us realize.

So long as we do not forget our place in the world and what might be at stake when we do.

The purpose of this letter to you is to remind you what it is you are risking when you take your health for granted and ignore the dangers you are increasingly likely to encounter, either because you are aging (the biggest risk factor for all disease) or because you are being thrust into an ever-changing world teeming with new microbial threats and environmental hazards.

In short, I am going to present to you an outline of something I think every inhabitant of the planet could do with right now.

For years now I have been preaching a life of dedication to physical and mental well-being. But you know what? Even I was blindsided by the emergence of COVID-19 in 2020.

Heart disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, cancer. Even dementia. I have been thinking about and writing about these chronic disablers of vitality and unencumbered good health for more than half my life. But a pandemic?

Not even remotely on my list of health hazards to guard against in the near future.

I should have known better. Especially because when Swine Flu struck in 2009 I found myself entirely side-lined by it.

I remember staring up at the ceiling from my bed, my vision pulsing in and out of focus with each heart beat, feeling as though someone was standing on my chest, and wondering with every labored breath I took whether it might very well be my last.

Yet I was one of the few people in my neighborhood to be severely affected that year by the emergence of a novel strain of animal virus jumped into human hosts.

Not this time. This time round I have plenty of company, but in a way I would never have anticipated.

In 2020 I saw my primary income-generating business shuttered for weeks on end as my city went into lockdown. I saw my livelihood collapse like a house of cards as paying customers to my gym disappeared, and yet the bills still kept coming!

Never mind the disease part of the equation.

COVID-19 was suffocating me before it even reached my door

It has done the same for millions of others who now find themselves not just worried about how their body will respond to an assault upon it, but also the effect of a pandemic on their livelihoods.

I should have been prepared when it happened. But I wasn’t.

It is almost as if the pain of my last experience with a pandemic was washed away like the temporary pain of child birth. Agony one day, a distant memory just a few weeks later.

Whatever the reason, of all the health crises I have fumbled my way through over the years, and I have seen more than my fair share, my pandemic experience has never been one I felt the urge to share with others. A once-in-a-lifetime event, never to be repeated, not worth thinking twice about…

And then along comes COVID-19 to remind us that, yeah, in the scheme of things we know nothing. Not only that, but…

As Bad As It Seems Now, It Can Always Get Worse…

As I have said, I was as surprised as anyone when I learned that a previously unheard-of disease seemed to be coming out of Asia and might threaten populations in every country of the world.

Coronavirus? I thought to myself. What’s that?

Somehow it escaped my attention that we have had coronavirus pandemics in the past. I vaguely remember the SARS outbreak from years ago, but not the MERS epidemic that came after it. All coronaviruses. All occurring within the last 20 years. All entirely off my radar, as I suspect they might have been for most people.

Apparently though, not a surprise to everyone.

In a paper published in January 2019 Chinese scientists concluded: “It is highly likely that future SARS- or MERS-like coronavirus outbreaks will originate from bats, and there is an increased probability that this will occur in China.” [BATS-2019]

The infectious disease experts, we now learn, had been growing increasingly worried in recent years as they watched natural animal habitats being encroached upon by man. The more we cut away jungle, burn forests to the ground, convert mountain tops into piles of rubble, and turn exotic animal species into curious dining choices in live animal markets, the more we raise the likelihood that a previously harmless animal virus will cross over to our world and cause havoc.

What we are seeing happen now we have seen happen before

The great Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed one out of every 10 people it infected throughout the world. Before it swept through the human race it was a nuisance virus which affected pigs. A few months before that, a virus which circulated harmlessly in birds.

Laurie Garret, the author of “The Coming Pandemic” which she released in 1995, says she thinks the COVID-19 pandemic will settle into a recurrent series of outbreaks that will be with us for years. Other epidemiologists expect new and unforeseen strains of animal viruses to cross over into the human population every few years going forward. A simple consequence of our inability to leave the natural world to itself.

It has been estimated that 1.7 million “human-capable” viruses are harbored by wildlife species, any one of which could cross the gap and take residence within us if the right conditions are met, any one of which could prove even more bothersome than the viral threats we have been exposed to already.

In other words…

There Is No Shortage Of Potentially Pandemic-Ingiting Fuel Out There!

Yet, even if we did manage to pull back on our relentless push to clear or mine natural landscapes and replace them with farm land or piles of rock we cannot escape the effect of climate change on newly emerging diseases.

Our carbon emissions-driven lifestyle is causing the planet to warm. Vectors of disease, like mosquitos and other insects, or even large wandering herds of mammals, are taking diseases once confined to the tropics and pushing them further north and south.

In the coming years you are going to be exposed to a higher likelihood of contracting Lyme disease, dengue and yellow fever, Zika and West Nile virus, hantavirus… even some of the “old” threats you thought could never migrate your way may show up on your doorstep, including measles, tuberculosis, cholera, and malaria.

Your prospects for dodging every single one of these bullets? Reasonable for now. But as time goes on?

The COVID-19 Pandemic Shattered Any Illusions About How Quickly Our Fortunes Can Change…

So what should you do?

Should you wait around until the government comes up with new vaccines to stem every possible threat?

No. Not if our experience with the coronavirus outbreak is anything to judge by.

Here is the unpleasant truth. No pharmaceutical company can afford to allocate the resources to develop costly vaccines ahead of time.

Unless the government is footing the bill (which they have been reluctant to do in recent decades) vaccines are only created AFTER it becomes apparent we have a desperate need for them. And then they are delivered to market after long and highly stressful delays.

Because of this I have come to the realization that no rational approach to personal long-term health care should rely in any part on whether or not vaccines come into existence.

Any viable approach to coming up with a solid plan for personal protection has to be one that depends ONLY on what YOU can do for yourself

Not what others MIGHT be able to do for you at some point in the future.

Yes, by all means, take advantage of reliable, well-designed vaccines if they should appear.

But by far the more rational plan of action is to prime your own body’s natural ability to defend itself against disease ahead of any incident for which that might be necessary. At the same time you can use this opportunity to sharpen your body’s reflexive tendency to attempt to heal itself when it has been damaged as a result of putting up a fight.

Better yet, the wait time on spooling up your immune system for battle against a microbial threat is always going to be much, much shorter than the time it takes to bring a vaccine to market…

In fact, compared to what your body can do for you in response to a novel pathogen, a vaccine is only ever going to offer you partial protection. That’s because…

Your Body Is Pre-Armed With A Defensive Capability That By Comparison Makes The World’s Best-Equipped Fighting Forces Look Meek And Defenceless

So why not use the full capability of your immune system to keep you protected?

Chronic health conditions are becoming an increasingly common feature of modern life – especially as we advance into middle age. Unless of course we take early and decisive preventative action.

According the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC-COVID-19] this especially-at-risk group is made up of people with:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Diabetes
  • Severe obesity
  • Serious heart conditions
  • Chronic kidney disease being treated with dialysis
  • Liver disease
  • Compromised immune system

Then of course there is the inescapable risk factor which amounts to being of retirement age (65 years) or older. This paints a very large set of crosshairs on every person living in nursing homes or in long-term care facilities.

If any of these comorbidities, or the “elder penalty”, describe you or someone you know, life is likely to suddenly seem so much more fragile.

Now, I cannot turn the clock back for you. Nor can I reverse the damage of a long-tolerated disease. But not all the chronic conditions listed above are immune to the positive effects of self care.

That I certainly can help you with.

More importantly, if you are relatively healthy now, I can teach you how to prolong that state of good health. This can be done in anticipation of eventually falling ill with COVID-19 or any other unforeseeable pathogen-mediated disease which may gain traction in the future.

Inflammation, especially in the lungs where it can escalate to a state of over-reaction to infection, is the primary cause of death in those who contract COVID-19.

Even for those who weather the inflammatory chemical mayhem (doctors call this a “cytokine storm”) that has taken so many lives, the damage to lung tissue and to tissues elsewhere in the body can be lasting.

So this is an illness you want to avoid if at all possible. And certainly if you cannot avoid it you want to endure it with the least amount of internal, and quite possibly permanent, damage.

But short of the appearance of a working vaccine there is nothing that can be done to stop you from being infected if you come into contact with COVID-19 or any variant of it which might follow in the years ahead.

Almost every health professional in the world agrees that reducing the severity of your pre-existing chronic illnesses should reduce your odds of being severely affected by this virus should it make its way into your body.

This is also true for any other potentially deadly microbial threat.

If you want to remain disease-free, then you’ll want to maintain your level of physical fitness.

During these months I’ll help you:

    • AVOID DYING PREMATURELY. None of us are in a hurry to journey to The Great Beyond. What many do not appreciate is the role physical activity helps us to stay tethered to The Land of the Living. What’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t exercise? I’ll let you know, and how to prevent it.


    • FORTIFY YOUR BODY. A strong body is your ticket to a longer life, a potentially disease-free life, a life spent worrying about the pitfalls of frailty (of which there are many – including susceptibility to disease). I’ll show you what’s needed to create a body that is forever-strong.
